Difference Between Chiropractors and Medical Doctors

If you are one of those people who have been to hospitals for different forms of treatment then you probably have a rough idea about which type of medical practitioner deals with a particular complication. You are able to tell which type of doctor you are dealing with just by reading the initials that accompany their name. One of the most widely used initials is MD which basically stands for doctor of medicine. They are mainly in charge of handling the general body conditions. If you go to hospital with a back ache and your back needs special attention, the doctor will refer you to the a doctor with the initials “CD” next to the name and these are mainly used to represent the Chiropractic doctors with the initials being used to mean “Doctor of Chiropractic.” This may drive some people to ask what the two initials actually mean and the difference between the two types of doctors. Here are some of the characteristics that may help people who are looking to distinguish the chiropractors from regular doctors:

Education: The doctors and chiropractors are trained to handle two different areas of medicine and this means that the skills sets also differ. They all start off from the same place in college by studying anatomy as well as physiology but after the first two years they end up taking separate paths. The chiropractors go to chiropractic school for four years after two years in undergraduate school. Once they graduate from chiropractic school, this is followed up by two years of internship at an outpatient facility. As for the medical doctors, the four years of undergraduate studies are followed up by four years in medical school. The students then proceed to take up internship for at least one year at a hospital followed up by residency in their area of specialty for around two to three years. This is meant to give them ample experience before they eventually start practicing.

Licensing: The chiropractors get their license from the State Board of Examiners while the doctors get their licenses after taking up exams from the United States Medical Licensing Board just before they take up residency. The doctors also have to pass examinations from the State Board of Medical Licensing followed by an exam which is set by the American Board of Medical Specialties just when they are about to go for a particular specialty.

Treatment Methods: The chiropractors prescribe their treatment in the form of dietary supplements or vitamins while the doctors prescribe medication. The doctors are also allowed to carry out invasive surgery in some cases while the chiropractors use non-invasive treatment which focuses on manual manipulation of the spinal cord.

Chiropractic acre cannot be considered as an alternative for medical care as much as it is also referred to in some circles as alternative medicine. Chiropractic care can also be used as a way of supplementing medical care. You need to seek advice from a medical practitioner if you have doubts about which kind of doctor to visit. You can also visit a chiropractor if you get the opportunity.
